Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack for the program?
We will send a comprehensive list of packing items closer to your departure date. However, some of the essentials we recommend bringing include a European-style adapter, all necessary prescription medications, good walking shoes, rain gear, and clothes for a variety of temperatures. We also advise having all important travel documents on hand.
At Rønningen, you will receive bedding, a towel and washcloth, a packed-lunch container, and your travel card for Oslo public transport. In addition, you can check out a variety of items from reception, such as irons and hairdryers.
Does any programming run on weekends?
We do not run any weekend programming so that you are free to use your time exploring the area or venturing further afield. We will also provide you with a personal travel guide that will display various noteworthy destinations such as museums, hikes, and nearby cities in the greater Oslo area. This will be updated regularly also notifying you about events throughout the city during the summer. However, it is up to the participants to book and pay for these experiences.
What does the meal plan look like?
Our accommodations at Rønningen provide three meals per day including weekends. These come in the form of a cold breakfast bar in the morning, a packed lunch bar at breakfast time, and a warm dinner in the evening. Our chefs take great care to accommodate dietary restrictions/observances as much as possible and are open to suggestions via the provided suggestion box. Non-Rønningen meals will be at participant’s expense unless otherwise noted.
*Note that Rønningen meals generally follow a standard Norwegian diet that consists primarily of bread, lunch meats, potatoes, greens, etc.
Am I required to attend all meals at Rønningen?
No meals are strictly required, and participants are welcome to find their own meals whenever they wish. However, skipping a meal at Rønningen does not discount from the program price, as meals come as a part of the accommodations bundle.
Where are the nearest grocery stores?
There are many grocery stores in the Kjelsås area, several of which are within a 15-minute walk from Rønningen. The two nearest options are a Coop Prix on Midtoddveien and a SPAR of Myrerskogveien. For a wider variety of goods, many neighborhoods nearer the city center offer a greater selection, such as Storo and Grønland. Please note that most grocery stores are closed on Sundays.
How does my Oslo travel pass work?
The Oslo Ruter card functions as your pass to all public transport in central Oslo, including buses, trams, metro lines, and ferries. The card will be active only in Zone 1, as programming will seldom require trips beyond this region, and necessary trips with official programming will be covered.
To activate your card, simply tap it onto one of the card scanners provided on each transit vehicle. Once activated, it will remain valid for the entirety of the program. We also recommend downloading the Ruter app for mapping journeys and staying up-to-date on traffics changes and delays.
